While most natural stone countertops add timeless elegance and a feeling of stability to your home, they can require a little extra care and maintenance. Granite and quartz countertops have historically been two of the most popular options in countertops for their organic appearance, durability and natural beauty.
Fortunately, granite and quartz are both more durable and less labor intensive to maintain than many other materials. Here are a few easy care tips that can make all the difference in keeping your stone countertops looking fresh.
1. Clean with the Right Products
Granite is sensitive to chemicals but is a hard and dense stone. Clean up using mild pH-neutral dish soap with warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid strong chemicals, which may damage the granite and discolor the quartz. Commercial cleaners made for stone surfaces are also appropriate.
2. Keep It Dry: Wipe Up Spills ASAP!
Granite and quartz resist stains, but liquids need to be wiped away quickly. Coffee, red wine, and oils will penetrate and stain granite if left for too long.
A sealed granite surface should bead water; if it soaks in, it’s time to reseal. While quartz is less porous, it may still be sensitive to the effects of harsh chemicals and prolonged spills, so timely cleaning is especially important.
3. Prevent Scratches & Heat Damage
Granite and quartz are hard but not indestructible. Always use cutting boards since sharp knives will scratch these surfaces. It is never a good idea to place a hot pan or baking sheet on them, as granite may crack from abrupt temperature changes and quartz has a tendency to discolor due to direct contact with hot surfaces. If you do need to set your hot pots or pans on your counters, always use trivets or pot holders to protect the countertops.
4. Resealing Granite
Granite countertops should be resealed with a commercial grade sealer every 1-2 years.. To apply a new coat of sealer, thoroughly clean and dry your surface in advance per the cleaning instructions above, then apply your sealer by rubbing it onto a cloth according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Finally, wipe away any excess per the sealant manufacturer’s instructions to give the surface an even smooth finish and allow to dry. If you have questions as to the best products for re-sealing your granite countertops, feel free to contact us at Carr Cabinets and we’ll be happy to recommend the best products.
Quartz conversely doesn’t need sealing since it is not porous and it has a natural resistance against stains and bacteria.
5. Keep Things Light on Decoration and Chemicals
Only appropriate cleaning products should be applied to stone surfaces using a soft cleaning approach. Acidic or abrasive products should never be used, as these may cause a negative impact on the stone surface over time. Avoid placing colored planters or metals that might bleed color or create abrasion marks on the surface.
6. A Simple Every-Day Solution to Water Spots
Most common countertop cleaning issues can be solved by cleaning then buffing the surface dry with a microfiber cloth to remove water spots.
7. Removing Tough Granite Stains
Granite can potentially develop tough stains that require overnight baking soda paste application. It is always best to consult with a professional before addressing the removal of these stains on granite surfaces. Again, Carr Cabinets will do our best to advise you as to the best methods for granite stain removal, whenever possible.
